About AMSSF

Mr. Almire Major Smith's life was marked by a profound dedication to service, education, and community upliftment. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Smith's sense of duty extended far beyond the battlefield, as he dedicated himself to serving his community and supporting the educational aspirations of future generations. Throughout his tenure as a Housekeeping Supervisor at East Carolina University, Mr. Smith demonstrated unwavering commitment to his work and touched the lives of countless students and colleagues with his kindness and generosity. As a father of eight children, Mr. Smith's passion for education was deeply personal, as he strived to ensure that his children had the opportunities he never had, motivating them to pursue higher education at colleges and universities across North Carolina.

Established by his devoted grandchildren, the scholarship aims to honor Mr. Smith's remarkable life and continue his legacy by providing opportunities for African American students to access higher education and make meaningful contributions to their communities across North Carolina. Emphasizing both academic excellence and community service, the scholarship seeks to empower individuals who share Mr. Smith's values of resilience, integrity, and service to others.
